Human Rights Watch says that it is “the evident abuse of power” in the attempt of closing Fundamedios
Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Wednesday suggested the Government to desist “immediately its attacks against independent human rights organizations in Ecuador,” referring to the dissolution of the Fundamedios NGO.
“The arbitrary closure of the organization would violate the government’s obligations of respecting and protecting the fundamental rights of freedom of expression and freedom of association,” warned HRW.
For Daniel Wilkinson, manager director for the Americas of Human Rights Watch, “the government of (Rafael) Correa wishes to punish an organization for tweeting news articles and opinions it does not like. It is a clear abuse of power and a clear example of the authoritarian practices of this government.”
Wilkinson insisted that “The attempt of Correa government’s to eliminate Fundamedios only reinforces the serious concerns that exist about the limitations on freedom of expression in Ecuador.”
