Idea of an Environment Court is criticized
As a “not viable” and “unnecessary” proposal defenders of nature qualified the idea of creating an International Court of Environmental Justice raised by President Rafael Correa in the Climate Conference (COP21), which takes place in Paris.
Paul Stone, YASunidos activist, said that the purpose of the meeting is to take urgent action to counteract the greenhouse gas emissions, so the idea of creating an environmental court is important but not immediate.
Ines Manzano, a lawyer specializing in environmental law, contended that a court is not necessary in this situation because there are others that defend rights such as the Court of The Hague and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
Environment Minister Daniel Ortega told El Ciudadano website that this is a “proposal of rupture” and that environmental justice requires a legally binding agreement as part of the conclusions of the Paris conference, so there could be follow-ups.
