Iguazu Falls and the Amazon, Chosen as the “Wonders of Nature”
The Amazon River and Iguazu Falls were named new wonders of nature in a vote by Internet, telephone and text messages made by thousands of people.
The complete list includes Halong Bay, Vietnam, Komodo, Indonesia, the island of Jeju in South Korea Table Mountain in South Africa, and the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River in the Philippines, according to the web new7wonders.com.
Many people gathered in the square of Iquitos, the capital of Loreto, Peru’s largest Amazon region, erupted in cheers as the announcement was made at 19:07 GMT.
The area or river drainage basin is approximately 7,050,000 square kilometers, the world’s largest, covering territories of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil, among others.
Iguazu Falls, formed by 275 jumps up to 80 meters high, fed by the flow of the homonymous river, are in an enclave border between Argentina and Brazil, also very close to Paraguay.
