The Ecuadorian Statistics and Census Institute (INDEC) presented the results of the last population and housing census of the country.
The results of this census, conducted in 24 provinces, 221 cantons and 800 rural parishes, found that Ecuador has a population of 14’483.499 inhabitants confirming Guayaquil as the most populous city with 2’291 .158 citizens followed by Quito with 1’619 .146 people; 331.88 in Cuenca and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas has 305,632 inhabitants.
Byron Villacis INDEC’s Director said the institution’s data will be used to plan development, business and technical decisions in the future.
From the residents in a working age, around 3’592 172 women belong to the economically active population, compared to .071 1’809 men.
Only 13% of the Ecuadorian population has Internet service at home; the 26.3% use a computer and a 17.5% have the cable TV service.
According to the study of INEC the last twenty years shows that there was a steady decline of population under five years of age due to the declining number of children per household. That means that today women prefer to have up to two children. (BG)
