Indigenous of Ecuador sue Chevron at the International Criminal Court
Ecuadorian indigenous submitted on Thursday, October 23 a complaint before the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Chevron, sentenced in Ecuador for environmental damage in the Amazon region, said theirLawyer in Quito.
Amazonian communities intended through this action that the Prosecutor, in the event of admitted the complaint, to start a trial against the Chevron Executive Chairman, John Watson, for alleged offenses against humanity stemming from environmental contamination.
The Lawyer said that the affected from Chevron presented in The Hague a letter to the ICC Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, in which they describe the “widespread and systematic attack” they face because of the refusal of Chevron to repair the damage its affiliate Texaco caused in the Amazon rainforest between 1964 and 1990, despite beingcondemned in Ecuador.
The complaint is “for crimes against humanity, because the damage of Chevron in Ecuador has caused the death of hundreds of people from cancer and leukemia,” said Pablo Fajardo, indigenous representative.
