Isla Trinitaria’s inhabitants protest over fear of evictions
This Friday several residents of cooperatives Andres Quinonez 2, Vencer o Morir 3, Isla del Valle y Enrique Gordillo of the Isla Trinitaria, close to the Trinipuerto, south of Guayaquil, peacefully protested against the possibility of being evicted from their homes, as occurred in the area of Monte Sinai, north of the city.
According to Lucetty Pachito, inhabitant, they have lived in this area for over 18 years and now they fear the possibility of an eviction. “There is no legal document that orders an eviction, but the statements to the media made by the lawyer Julio Cesar Quinonez (Irregular Settlements technical secretary), worried us, because he speaks of a relocation,” said Pachito.
The inhabitant admitted that everyone understands that people who are on the shores of the Salado estuary must leave the place, but do not understand why they would have given the order to relocate families living in the central part of the island.
The government of Rafael Correa has declared a zero tolerance policy to land invasions and informal settlements, and has given orders that all illegal construction built after 2010, when he issued a decree on the matter, be vacated and demolished.
