Jewish Community in Argentina demanded a formal apology from President Correa
Waldo Wolff, vice president of the Delegation of the Argentine Jewish Association (DAIA for its Spanish acronym) assured the Argentine newspaper “La Nación” that “the malaise will continue until (Correa) formally apologize.”
This week, Argentine media echoed the controversy and questioned the silence of the government of President Cristina Kirchner. Wolff asked President Kirchner “to show Ecuadorian president that the whole Argentinean society is very hurt with his expressions.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Communication of the Presidency said that the statements of President Rafael Correa about the bombing of the AMIA (Argentina-Israeli Mutual Association), occurred in 1994, were taken out of context. However, Jewish organizations insist in a publicly retract from Correa.
During an interview with channel C5N, Correa was asked about Iran’s refusal to hand over the accused of the attack. The president replied: “I know this case. It is very painful for Argentina’s history, but see how many were killed in the NATO bombing of Libya. Also compare things and see where the real dangers are, we should not manipulate. “
The comparison outraged the Jewish community in that country, considered the fifth biggest in the world, and the families of the victims of the attack.
