Posted On 01 Sep 2011
A week after Hurricane Irene caused floodings in northwestern United States, Hurricane Katia began moving west, across the Atlantic.
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Katia, which is category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, strengthened during the weekend with winds of 120 km per hour. However, Katia remained at 1710 km east of the Leeward Islands and there is a possibility that it will run north and will disappear without touching the mainland of North America.
Katia is approaching when the U.S. president, Barack Obama declared a state of “major disaster” in NewJersey and New York.
