La Concordia is now canton of Santo Domingo, the first law of the Assembly
Yesterday, the National Assembly approved that canton La Concordia, legally, became part of to the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas, this was the first act of the legislature in the new period.
The National Assembly approved a project which amended the law of creation of the Canton La Concordia, in which it was defined the adherence of the canton to the tsachila province. The reform, which is inherited from the previous period, had 110 votes in favour, 7 against and 10 abstentions.
La Concordia had no jurisdiction, not even as a parish, because that meant to define its belonging to the province of Esmeraldas and Pichincha. In 2006, when Santo Domingo was incorporated as a province, said Assembly member Mary Verduga (AP), was defined the membership in favour of Santo Domingo, which was confirmed by the referendum held on 5 February 2012, where there was a majority ruling in favor of the membership of the tsachila province.
Following this approval, the Assembly members of Alianza Pais (AP) of Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas, along with the Mayor of La Concordia, Walter Ocampo, and the Prefect responsible for Santo Domingo, Pedro Alcivar, thanked the Assembly for the approval, which will receive resources for priority projects as $19 million for the provision of sewerage.
While the four assembly members of Esmeraldas of Alianza País: Gabriel Rivera, Ivan Hurtado, Esperanza Galvan and Lenin Lara, dismayed, pointed out that they voted against the draft because they honored their commitment to the people of Esmeraldas, who aspired for the Concordia to belong to the Green province.
