Lara’s deportation is unlikely says his defense
Former Assemblyman Galo Lara remains detained at the headquarters of the Directorate of Judicial Investigation (DIJ) of Panama and is “unlikely” to be deported in the coming hours by his condition of “refugee”, said this Monday to EFE his lawyer Jose Nelson Brandao.
Lara, who in May Panamanian government revoked the asylum granted to him in October 2013, was taken today at the premises of the DIJ from the province of Veraguas, where he was arrested at dawn by the National Police (PN) of Panama.
Brandao affirmed that so far no one has informed of a possible deportation of Lara, and that would be a total “legal outburst” and a “violation of human rights” because his client has protection as a “refugee”.
The lawyer said it was the Panamanian Foreign Ministry which has jurisdiction on the subject and who can determine the extradition of Lara, which, he said, “is not possible”, because it must be first resolved a reconsideration of the revocation of asylum and a habeas corpus brought before the Supreme Court on behalf of the Ecuadorian political.
