Large ship impacts and damages part of the Duran – Santay pedestrian bridge

A new collision of a ship against the pedestrian bridge of Santay Island was recorded at 18:27 yesterday, when a ship that was docked at a dock in Duran allegedly drifted and was dragged by the current.
On October 12, 2017, but in Guayaquil, a fishing vessel collided with the structure generating the collapse of an approximate 100-meter stretch; Even on May 15, in the midst of reconstruction work, a ship of the Ecuadorian Navy struck the bridge for the second time without causing major damage.
The impact of yesterday occurred at 18:27. Witnesses said that pedestrians ran to the banks of the pass to see that the blow was imminent.
The ECU-911 system spread the moment of the collision on its Twitter account. The citizens also posted in their networks how the ship was embedded in the structure.
According to a policeman who arrived at the Abel Gilbert Ponto boardwalk, where the bridge begins, the huge cargo ship broke off from the berth and the tide brought it against a part of the bridge. Supposedly no crew member was on the ship.
Dozens of people filming passages of the incident with their telephones had to move away from the pier when the warning was given that the vessel could impact the shore sideways. The passers-by ran to the order of the motorized policemen who demanded to leave the area.

There were no reports of injuries or deaths.
The entrance to the bridge, 678 meters long, was cordoned off. Staff of the Duran Fire Department arrived to inspect the damages.
The Police proceeded to remove the people who were on the Abel Gilbert boardwalk, as there was a security provision to close the place.
Eight months disabled
On the Guayaquil side, the pedestrian bridge of Santay Island, which in this section is 860 meters long, was reopened on June 21 last, after eight months of disqualification.
Then, the Government indicated that it was going to execute the recommendations of security protocols to avoid future accidents. Today, visitors are complaining about the state of roadways within the island.

The company Alcelsa, owner of the boat Patricia, that on October 12, 2017 impacted the pedestrian bridge of Santay Island, causing its partial collapse, assumed the repair of the structure for an estimated value of $ 5 million.
On November 21, a month after the collision, the repair agreement between the Governorate of Guayas, the Works Contracting Service (Secob) and Alcelsa was signed.
The estimated cost of the works was projected by Jorge Wated as director general of the Secob, who then said that it was being analyzed to implement escape stairs on the bridge, whose item would be in charge of the Government.
On June 21, the Santay Island bridge was reopened, after eight months of disqualification.
