Latin American Indigenous Want To Defend “Mother Earth”
The Social Forum in Porto Alegre (southern Brazil), joined Latin America’s indigenous who are against the works in the Amazon and the Andes, they want their voice to be taken into account in the decisions made by world leaders at the UN world summit for sustainable development in June in Rio de Janeiro.
“The UN summit in 1992 laid the foundation for sustainable development, but we have only seen great works, mining and oil, twenty years later, at the summit this year, we must ensure they do not repeat the same thing,” said Edwin Vasquez, head of the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA).
Three major Latin American organizations: the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (AGDP), Coordinadora Andina CAOI and Amazonica COICA announced that they will install a large Indian camp at the UN summit.
