Lawyer of daily El Universo does not see an “amicable agreement” with the State after notification of the IACHR

The lawyer of daily El Universo, Hernan Perez Loose, commented the decision of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of admitting the lawsuit of El Universo against the Ecuadorian State, he also mentioned that the use of criminal law and the criminal process was evident, supposedly to satisfy a claim, a violation of the honor of the president, in this particular case, it was an instrument of persecution and gagging to the freedom of opinion.
In addition, judicial guarantees that were not respected were of such gravity, of such magnitude, that despite the permanent insistence to judges that principles and provisions of international law were being breached, they paid no heed.
The legal expert recalled that once the domestic remedy was exhausted, they filed the international demand to the IACHR. On the possibility of an amicable settlement between Ecuador and daily El Universo, he said that the regulation provides that possibility, and recalled that the Perez brothers, owners of El Universo, wanted to reach this amicable settlement on two occasions, but this was rejected by the President, and this was even a reason for derision, insults, humiliation. Currently, given the circumstances, it is difficult that this happens.
