Lenin Moreno: ‘We will not allow the violation of our maritime sovereignty.’

Monday, August 21, 2017, President Lenin Moreno said in his weekly address that the country would not permit the violation of its maritime sovereignty by a foreign fishing fleet. He referred to a Chinese-flagged vessel that was operating within the limits of the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Galapagos Islands.

The President announced the strengthening of the operational capacity of the Naval Force to prevent the incursion of these vessels into the national maritime space. “Any vessel or fleet that illegally fishes in our territorial sea will be immediately seized, as we did last week,” said Moreno. He also stated that he has already filed a formal protest against the Government of the People’s Republic of China due to the presence of the fishing fleet in Ecuadorian territory. (I)
