A statement from the presidency of South Africa revealed the critical health condition of former President Nelson Mandela, who has been hospitalized for over two weeks with a lung infection.
During the visit of President Jacob Zuma to the hospital where Mandela is hospitalized, on Sunday afternoon, doctors told him “that the health status of the former president had become critical in the last 24 hours.”
After that, Zuma with Cyril Ramaphosa, Vice President of the ANC -party in power-, and Mandela’s wife, Graca Machel, gathered at the hospital that same day in the evening to discuss the situation.
Mandela, icon of the struggle against apartheid and South Africa’s first black president in 1994, will turn 95 years old on July 18.
