Alvaro Noboa, a banana magnate and former candidate for the presidency of Ecuador, joined the marches organized against the regime’s policies, on Wednesday, September 16. The also leader of the Prian arrived at 17:45 at the corner of Malecon and Tomas Martinez streets, where one of his office is located, and addressed to his supporters from a stage mounted on the sidewalk.

Around 2000 people attended Noboa´s convocation, who occupied three blocks from the boardwalk. There, sympathizers of the Prian and the Concentration of Popular Forces (CFP) and Patriotic Society parties, mixed with their banners and flags.

Noboa’s sit-in forced the Municipal Transit Agency to temporarily close the passage of vehicles on four blocks from the boardwalk, causing congestion in transversal streets of this important avenue of downtown Guayaquil.

Three blocks south, on the corner of Malecon and the 9 de Octubre avenue, the National Police ordered a strong barrier formed by anti-riot agents. The blockade prevented the passage of the demonstrators to the dependencies of the Guayas Governor´s office, the Prefecture and the Municipality of Guayaquil.

Dressed in a black shirt with the phrase “Blessed by God” on his back, Noboa addressed to his supporters for about 25 minutes. “I have not stopped praying,” he pronounced surrounded by the leaders of his party. On his right, listening silently, was the national former assembly member, Fernando Balda, leader of Patriotic Society; below, among the public, Anabella Azín, wife of the businessman, and Santiago, one of the sons of the couple did the same.

“Taxes that are higher anfd higher, are those that have made the cost of the family basket increasingly unaffordable,” Noboa argued between long pauses. The former presidential candidate called on stage Correa’s resignation, as he did during a similar sit-in on August 13 in that same place.

Noboa and the supporters of his party, the Patriotic Society party and the CFP headed towrds the 9 de Octubre avenue and there, they resumed their march until reaching the San Francisco church, at 18:30. Noboa and his wife briefly entered the church, while his supporters waited outside.
