Moncayo: “They intend to lynch the Armed Forces with processes against militaries”
The former mayor and legislator, Paco Moncayo, when commenting on constitutional amendments that give the military a complementary role in the fight against crime, said that this and all the amendments must be analyzed as a whole because as a whole they increase the authoritarianism.
All the amendments are aimed at the same end, because they want to turn communication into a pubic service, the union organization is weakened, the rights of the community are removed to consult on issues of interest, and beyond that they aim to give the Armed Forces missions based on a dark comprehensive security that is not well defined, then you will see that they have a set of constitutional provisions designed to confirm the arbitrary, authoritarian nature of the government that is now in power.
Moncayo, who also served as Head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, when referring to the ongoing trial against the former top military commanders of the regime of former President Leon Febres Cordero accused of crimes against humanity against members of the Alfaro Vive Carajo guerrilla group, said that this is another act of absolute arbitrariness.
According to Moncayo, it is a legal monstrosity, since it´s enough to read the Rome Statute that created the International Criminal Court, which clearly says that crimes against humanity are those made against the civilian population in a systematic and widespread, Alfaro Vive Carajo was a military group that declared war on the state.
In Ecuador, not even in the times of former President Leon Febres Cordero, there was a military repression, in a widespread and systematic manner against the civilian population. This situation “is another monstrosity, in my opinion of an attempt to lynch an important institution for the country, such as the Armed Forces.”
