Most councilors ask for resignation of Mayor Mauricio Rodas
Ecuadornews:
A majority of councilors from the Municipality of Quito (12 of a total of 21 councilors), led by Deputy Mayor Eduardo Del Pozo, has asked Mayor Mauricio Rodas to “step aside” after the corruption scandal over bribery charges has led to the capture of two councilors and two municipal officials.
The signatory councilors say that the officials are appointed by the Mayor, and accuse Rodas that “it does not guarantee a transparent process to fight against corruption, nor to rectify its poor and deficient commitment”, so they ask for his resignation and the one of the councilmen processed by the Office of the Prosecutor, Eddy Sánchez and Sergio Garnica, whom they describe as “allies to Rhodes”.
Both inquired councilors said that they will not attend the request of their twelve colleagues and that they will continue acting as councilors protected by the presumption of innocence established by the Constitution. Sanchez described the request of his colleagues as a political act. (I)
