Mubarak Secures his power with the Armed Forces
President Hosni Mubarak does not want to leave his position even after several days of riots in Egypt. The protesters remain on the streets demanding his resignation after 30 years of presidency. Today Mubarak had a meeting with high military officials. At the same time hunting jets flew low on the square Tahrir, this marked the beginning of the curfew at 16:00.
Mubarak opted to ignore the tension that continues to grow each day, regardless of deaths and injure after six days of riots. The 82 year old president met with the powerful chief of intelligence, Omar Suleiman; the ministry of Defense, Husein Tantawi; along the chief of State, Dami al Anan, and other high officials. The nature of the meeting has not been revealed.
Meanwhile Mohamed El Baradei, winner of the Nobel Peace prize joined the protestors to save Egypt. El Baradei reassured his fellow countrymen that a change will come on the next days. Today the reports of chaos in Egypt have decreased, and there were less people on the street. Military helicopters flew over Cairo, and some shots were heard in downtown. The civilian mobs armed with knives and sticks organized themselves to defend their properties. The police will continue with their patrols starting tomorrow morning to control the traffic a prevent lootings.
Manifestations have also occurred in other cities like, Alejandria, Mahalla, Mansura, Suez Sharm el Sheij, or Ismailiya, according to Al Yazira. Finally the chaos took a new turn when several inmates in the prison of Fayoum escaped to the desert. The prison of Wadi el Natroum, located at 120 km of the capital, also reported the escape of their prisoners who were helped by protesters.
