Mysterious Deaths in Ycaza Bustamante Children’s Hospital
The death of ten children inside the Ycaza Francisco Bustamante children’s hospital, in less than a week and for still unknown reasons, is a mystery.
Yesterday, experts from the Department of Criminology of the Guayas Judicial Police revealed details of what they found inside the nursing home. A first conclusion? There is lack of asepsis in operating rooms 1 and 5 of the care home.
The police inspection in the spot was conducted on 9 February, between 15:35 and 18:45, after the deaths of eight children, between 3 and 7 February this year. The deaths occurred in the newborn nursery room, presumably because of a hospital bacteria. Last Tuesday, in the same room, one boy died, bringing to nine the number of dead.
According to the inspection report, submitted on February 11, they found no news in the first two environments: the intensive care and emergency room. However, in the operating room, located on the first floor of the nursing home, they found several infectious foci.
The death of another child in the Ycaza Francisco Bustamante hospital nursery area, which occurred last Tuesday, will be cleared today by the authorities.
Yesterday the hospital confirmed the death of the child Estrada Mera, but officers refused to give further report.
Health Director of Guayas, Yuri Patiño, reported that patients have been moved from the neonatology area of the Francisco de Ycaza Bustamante Children’s Hospital to maternities Mariana de Jesus and the one from el Guasmo. They have been moved to Hospital Guayaquil too.
