According to Ecuador’s ambassador in Washington, Nathalie Cely, the current crisis in Syria and the request to raise the debt issue will delay the process in the U.S. Congress, for the renewal of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP). These activities were resumed yesterday by the legislation.
Through this mechanism Ecuador exported around 600 duty free products, however after its termination, along with the Act Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act (ATPDEA) since last August 1 they pay tariffs.
About 150 countries make up this system, including Angola, Turkey, India, Brazil, Thailand.
The director of the Chamber of Commerce Ecuadorian-American (AmCham), said that an objection is still pending for budgetary reasons. “They hope to recover the amount paid because as in the past is expected to be a retroactive approval.”
