NATO expects deployment of military presence in Eastern European countries
The Secretary General of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, said that the Atlantic Alliance for the first time will deploy troops in the new bases in Eastern Europe, reported European newspapers citing Rasmussen’s press office.
Rasmussen said that NATO military presence in countries like Poland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia will be strengthened “soon”.
“Our intention is to develop a unit that is a spearhead within the Response Force of NATO and available for intervention at any time. If an attack occurs, we could intervene in a matter of hours, “says Rasmussen.
The military alliance framed this decision in Article 5, which guarantees a common response in case of an armed attack against one of its members.
The decision will be addressed at the next NATO summit to be held on 4 and 5 September, where all member states of the alliance will participate.
