New offenses added on the Criminal Code reforms
The Organic Integral Criminal Code (COIP) includes at least twelve new types of penalties that, if approved by the National Assembly, would become recognized by Ecuadorian law and punishable by it.
Among the new offenses are raised: crimes against the sanctity of life, economic, against the right to property, against the integrity and personal freedom and against the right of work and security.
One of the new features in economic crimes are the economic panic, which is committed by the person who publishes, disseminates or discloses false information to cause harm to the economy in order to alter the prices of goods or services to benefit one sector or market; and financial panic, which is related with the dissemination of information that causes massive withdrawal of deposits in the population.
The Justice Committee, chaired by the ruling party member, Mauro Andino, hopes that the new Criminal Code get its approval in September.
