The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, completed an intense agenda of meetings with different leaders this December 10 in Buenos Aires, on the occasion of the presidential inauguration of the Argentine Javier Milei.
Noboa also participated in the ceremony that handed power to Milei, who will govern Argentina until 2027. The Ecuadorian shook the hands of his new colleague in the greeting of leaders, and then took a photo with the other presidents who attended the inauguration of Milei.
There is a high expectation about the evolution of bilateral relations between Ecuador and Argentina, which cooled in March 2023, when former minister María de los Ángeles Duarte fled from the Ecuadorian Justice to Venezuela with apparent help from Argentine diplomacy.
Duarte, Minister of Transportation in the government of Rafael Correa, was taking refuge in the Argentine embassy in Quito to avoid an eight-year prison sentence. Duarte always claimed to be politically persecuted.
Argentina had granted diplomatic asylum to Duarte, but Guillermo Lasso ‘s government refused to grant safe passage for her to leave the country.
The impasse generated the mutual expulsion of ambassadors. In July, Ecuador and Argentina sent ambassadors to Quito and Buenos Aires again.
Although relations between Ecuador and Argentina were already strained due to the return of the statue of Néstor Kirchner, placed by Correism in the Unasur building, but removed when Lenín Moreno assumed command in 2017.
