US Ambassador: there are corrupt front men in Ecuadorian soccer teams
The United States ambassador to Ecuador, Michael Fitzpatrick, said that there are front men for corrupt people in Ecuadorian soccer teams. He offered the statements at an academic event held at the UDLA, within the framework of the Commemoration of the 20 years of the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
Fiztpatrick said: “The corrupt do not only move chips in the public sector. They are laundering their money in bank accounts, fictitious companies. Their figureheads are even involved in the national passion: football.”
The diplomat did not specify teams from the Pro League. However, he said that they use “some teams to wash their face and their money.”
However, the Ambassador’s statements did not end there. Also, without specifying names, he spoke about the media.
“We have seen the collapse of some of the social media that pretended to be responsible observers when they are now seen as extortionists and paid by nefarious people to divert criminal investigations, confuse the national public and continue living well with money stolen from Ecuadorians.”
Until 7:46 p.m., there was no reaction from teams or the Pro League regarding Fitzpatrick’s statements.
