OAS report proposes drug legalization
Following the discussion in the 43rd Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Guatemala ended without any resolution regarding the regional strategy in the fight against drugs. However, the document that was the basis for this appointment raised such need.
The report ‘The drug problem in the Americas’, conducted at the request of the OAS refers to “the process of removing legal prohibitions on production, distribution and consumption of controlled substances… through substitution with a Regulated Market.”
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the controlled drug sales worldwide was $ 320,000 million in 2003, 0.9% of world GDP. It is estimated that in America is consumed about $ 151,000 million.
Additionally, the report found that violence is lower in countries to which the drug reaches insted of the countries that seves as traffic.
