Orange Alert in Coastal Zone due to Rising Tides
From today, the Emergency Operations Committee (COE) declared an orange alert in the coastal area of Ecuador.
It is expected that the big waves, coming from Chile accompanied by strong winds, will last until Sunday, so the alert could be extended until Wednesday August 17. Waves could reach up to two to four meters high, indicated the Risk Management secretary, Maria del Pilar Cornejo.
Cornejo said that the technical agencies are monitoring the event and that the alert will be changed when the conditions have vanished risk to the population.
The most vulnerable areas are Jambelí (El Oro), Salinas (Santa Elena), San Mateo and San Vicente (Manabi). Among the caution measures are the evacuation of Jambelí Island, the prohibition of fishing, water sports and whale watching (one of the attractions at this season).
