Organic products: a trend that grows and whose supply is reinvented
Posted On 28 Aug 2017
Ecuadornews:
This market, which started developing five years ago, still lacks official statistics. What is known is that it has been growing in recent years. There are 33,921 hectares of crops recorded in the country with that denomination, 15,611 of them are in the province of Guayas, which makes it the area of greater supply. Most of them are bananas and cacao, which serve not only as primary exports but also as raw materials for processed products: snacks, coffee, organic IQF fruits, fruit pulp, quinoa, panela and natural oils. The US and Europe are its main destinations.
A new logo and the homologation of standards seek to give a greater identity and scope to the organic production of the country. A promising market but with an arduous task of correcting processes to be able to position itself.
The work of reinventing this sector was initiated by the Ecuadorian Agency for Quality Assurance of Agro (Agrocalidad), with the launch of the first national logo for this type of products, already registered by the Ecuadorian Institute of Intellectual Property (IEPI).
The aim is for consumers to be able to quickly identify the healthiest products (cultivated or processed without pesticides or chemicals) and that the offer gains a greater endorsement in the international market. (I)
