A typical Ecuadorian hat made of straw known internationally as “Panama Hat”, considered one of the world’s finest of its kind, has been proposed by the Ecuadorian authorities to be included in the list of UNESCO’s cultural heritage.
Gabriela Eljuri, Director of the Austro Heritage Institute, said that “international recognition will contribute a lot to identify Ecuador as the country that produces it.”
According to Santiago Ordoñez, Cultural Heritage Institute, this distinction by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Fund (UNESCO) will drive sales of accessories and tourism in Ecuador, who plans to convert this area into one of the pillars of its economy. (BG)
