“People ask for water, Correa raises the VAT” by the headline, denounces government newspaper El Mercurio

Posted On 30 Apr 2016

A first complaint by the news coverage of earthquake last April 16 came to the Superintendency of Information and Communication (Supercom) against the newspaper El Mercurio de Cuenca.

On its cover last April 21, El Mercurio published in one of its headlines: ‘People ask for water; Correa raises VAT ‘, referring to the situation that existed in Manabi and the measures announced by President Rafael Correa on national television on April 20.

The complaint was filed Alexandra Toledo Ponce, Omar Zarate Loja, Marcelo Gómez Jara and Diego Lucero Amaya, who argue that the holder is not consistent with the development of the story and ask for a wake-up call to the media, he told the general editor of daily Mercury, Jorge Duran, La Hora.

Duran said the newspaper did not commit any infringement and that the holder does have relation to the text and also is separated with a semicolon (I).
