Prepaid medicine companies warn of damages by law

Posted On 01 Nov 2017

Ecuadornews:

After a year of the implementation of the Law of Medical Insurance and Prepaid Medicine, companies that offer health services and medical assistance policies requested a meeting with President Lenin Moreno to expose the economic damage they should face in case this regulation is not repealed or modified.

This law guarantees care for the elderly (over 65), people with disabilities and pregnant women who previously could not access this private health service.

It also regulates the treatment given to pre-existing diseases that are no longer considered as a condition for accessing an insurance policy. But the point of greatest confrontation is that companies must pay the State the value of the treatments in case their clients access to care in one of the hospitals of the Integral Health Network.

For the Association of Prepaid Medicine Companies it would be impossible to cover the medical expenses incurred by the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) that would amount to $ 70 million per year, the Ministry of Health, and the Social Security Institutes of the Armed Forces (Issfa), and the National Police (Isspol), estimated at about $ 20 million.
