Fernando Alvarado, National Secretary of Communications announced via twitter that next Monday, February 27th Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa will announce whether he forgives the penalty of 3 years in prison and pay $ 40 million to managers and one former columnist the El Universo Newspaper.
Alvarado said President Correa will address the people by reading his letter on Monday before the Changing of the Guard ceremony.
On 16 February, the National Court of Justice upheld the conviction against Cesar, Carlos and Nicolas Perez (managers of El Universo) and former columnist Emilio Palacio author of a column that Correa considers offensive. That same day, the President mentioned the possibility of a “referral” of the sentence and explained that he wanted to meet with his first political movement to “make the best decision to not affect this project.”
This week he reiterated that now that he has demonstrated the veracity of his claim and that El Universo has been convicted, he might void the claim.
