Prison and $ 5.9 million in fines to Chinese ship caught in Galapagos

The Multicompetent Judicial Unit of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, Galapagos, sentenced the 20 crew members of a Chinese cargo ship, the Fu Yuan Yu Leng 999, to jail and to pay the penalty. Two weeks ago, the ship and its crew were captured for fishing protected species.

The ruling issued last night ordered four years in prison for the captain of the ship, three years for his close assistants and one year for the other crew members, for the crime of possession and transport of protected species, according to Efe.

The severance payments and the penalties range from 127,000 to two million dollars. According to a press release from the Ministry of Environment, the fines to be paid total 5.9 million dollars, for the integral reparation of damages caused in this fragile marine ecosystem. (I)
