Rafael Correa pardoned Antonio Buñay, convicted of embezzlement in the Cofiec case
Ecuadornews:
President Rafael Correa on Tuesday granted pardon to Antonio Edmundo Buñay Dongilio, sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment, for the crime of embezzlement in the Cofiec case. The former president of the Cofiec bank was singled out as the authority that “pressed” loan officers to irregularly deliver a $ 800,000 loan to Argentine businessman Gaston Duzac, despite having no guarantees.
Executive Decree 1415 states: “The Presidential Pardon shall be granted in favor of Mr. Antonio Edmundo Buñay Dongilio, which consists in the pardon of the sentence imposed, maintaining the pecuniary sanction.”
Buñay, arrested on November 7, 2015 in Cumbayá, Quito, sought the presidential pardon in May 2017, which was granted because he “expressed deep regret,” according to one of the clauses of the Decree.
