Rafael Correa warns on NGOs and civil society, in the Vatican
President Rafael Correa called to ¨be very careful¨ with the definition of civil society because it could be ¨dangerous¨ for democracy, in his speech at the Conference for the 25th anniversary of the Encyclical Centesimus Annus, that was held at the Pontifical Academy of social sciences, at the Vatican City.
¨Here people have spoken about the importance of civil society in society, I tell them: we have to be very careful with that¨, declared before an audience of intellectuals and religious.
According to Andes Agency, Correa expressed concern about the claim by some that there is “politics without politicians”.
¨That worries me a little bit because for me there is nothing more dangerous for democracy than political actors without political responsibility¨, he said.
He also questioned the work of certain NGOs which, according to him, ¨they are not non-governmental organizations, but organizations of other Governments¨.
Correa and his counterpart in Bolivia, Evo Morales, were the only rulers invited to the event, refered AFP news agency. (I)
