The President of Cuba, Raul Castro, offered again the U.S. government the option of a “respectful dialogue” that does not affect the sovereignty of the island and stated that both nations can establish a “civilized relationship.”
During his speech on Saturday to the National Assembly to close its last meeting of the year, Castro recalled that the island has addresed Washington “on multiple occasions” to carry out a “respectful dialogue, with equality, without compromising the independence, sovereignty and self-determination” of Cuba.
But Castro also added “that would be the only way. Otherwise, we are willing to endure another 55 years in the same situation.”
