Ruling party Assembly members rejected review from U.S. senators
Last Thursday the ruling party Assembly members rejected the alleged “interference” exerted by eight U.S. senators, both Democrats and Republicans, who, in a letter, criticized decisions of President Rafael Correa.
Senators would have suggested Correa “to strengthen respect from his government towards democratic principles” and towards the opposition, to cease his efforts to undermine the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), an autonomous body of the OAS based in Washington, among other issues.
On their behalf, the assembly members of Alianza PAIS (AP) replied the Senators and said that the claims made by them are “false.” “For these reasons, we express our total rejection of your interference manifested in matters that are none of your business,” adds the Ecuadorian reply.
“We believe that if your concern was consistent and sincere, you should concentrate your efforts on ending” civil rights violations “affecting humanity and your own citizens,” the letter added.
