Scarce maize crop affects farm food

Ecuadornews:
The industry that produces and provides animal feed to the farms in the country is concerned about the accumulated deficit of its most important commodity: corn, the 50% of the formulation.
Executive president of the Association of Producers of Balanced Food (Aprobal) Jorge Josse reveals that the companies reached the winter harvest of this year without sufficient stocks. “We arrived scratching the floor because the commercialization regulation of the Government was not respected.”
The regulation says that before harvesting, the industry should have reserved at least the amount equivalent to a month of consumption of corn in grain, “but last year’s harvest was very bad because 650,000 tons were registered in the Ministry of Agriculture (Magap) when 950,000 are normally registered.” That is, in 2016 there was a reduction in production of 300,000 metric tons.
The ministry only gave import permits for 150,000 tons, which were not enough to cover the shortfall of about 400,000 tons, as the local industry consumes one million tons. The little wheat they had in the hold saved them.To fill the gap, the balancing industry requests an allocation of import quotas. Last year, the import of only 150,000 tons was allowed, an insufficient amount to cover the deficit. (I)
