Security Forces Suppress Protests in the city of Aleppo
The regime security forces fired tear gas and opened fire with live ammunition to disperse thousands of demonstrators in Aleppo. Activists said that this was the largest protest in a city that has remained more loyal to the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.
The purpose of the protest pointed to rising anti-regime sentiment in Syria’s biggest city. This event occurred after the raid on May 3 in the dormitories of the Aleppo University, which unusually became violent and killed four students, afterwards it forced the temporary closure of the state-run school.
Last Thursday, around 15,000 students demonstrated outside the gates of the Aleppo University in the presence of UN observers. Aleppo known activist Mohammed Saeed said, “the number of protesters is increasing every day and today saw the biggest protests.” (AV)
