SOLCA projects are in jeopardy for non payment

A month is the only time left for SOLCA (“Núcleo Cuenca de la Sociedad de Lucha contra el Cáncer” in Spanish) before going bankrupt. “After that period of time, if the Government doesn’t pay its pending obligations, we won’t be able to operate”, said Carola Ríos, SOLCA’s director.

Just for the referral of patients from the public health network, the State owes about $ 5.7 million to SOLCA, corresponding to last year.

In Quito, the situation is more difficult. State debt is $ 35.9 million. That debt affects the operation of other SOLCA’s offices in Ambato, Riobamba, Santo Domingo and Ibarra.

Its president, Solón Espinosa, said in a meeting with the press, that due the debt he had to stop at least four projects: the extension of SOLCA’s hospital in Quito, the construction of oncological clinics in Ibarra and Santo Domingo, the replacement of linear accelerators, and the acquisition of new technology.

These works were considered a priority, explains the president of SOLCA in Quito. They were a response to the increasing patient demand. 10,000 patients were treated each month. But between 2014 and 2015 there was an increment of 2,000 patients monthly. (I)
