SRI’s Website Reveals Identity of Debtors
Carlos Marx Carrasco, SRI’s manager, said that the decision to make public the debtor is covered by the Tax Code, article N°99, which authorizes the Administration to make public the names of taxpayers and the values that have been paid or not their tax obligations.
The database is in the first instance with individuals and companies with strong obligations. Then, incorporate cases that are in judicial or administrative authority in the SRI. According to SRI, there are 100 thousand taxpayers who have outstanding obligations.
Jorge Ayala, tax specialist, said that the publication of the name of the debtor may give a “social ridicule” not necessarily encourages the taxpayer to pay. In his point of view, it could be used other reporting channels to collect debts.
