In Guayaquil, Ana Mylena Zúñiga (11 years old) started her virtual classes at Colegio Logos

The National Anthem will be played in an empty courtyard at the Lemas Educational Unit . Only the authorities will go to the campus, located in the north of Guayaquil, while teachers and students will follow the return to school ceremony from their homes .

With symbolic acts the new school year begins today in at least 100 private educational institutions of the Costa cycle. These schools received authorizations from the Ministry of Education after meeting various requirements. The official start is set for June 1.

The undersecretary of Education of zone 8, Alexandra Higgins, indicated that the establishments had to corroborate the connectivity conditions and the tools of their students to maintain the virtual classes. Also, agree on costs with parents due to the crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic.

Víctor Hugo Calderón , corporate director of the Lemas Educational Unit , explained that since April 15 the teachers approached the 1,200 students enrolled to assess the telematic conditions of each home. “This included equipment and connectivity to conduct the virtual studies.”

In addition to this work, the training of teachers for the use of virtual platforms and the adjustment of curricular meshes are added . In addition, notification to parents of discount plans and differentiated payment methods .

Abelardo García Meneses , president in Guayas of the Ecuadorian Corporation for the Quality of Education (Corpeducar), assured that enrollment rates have risen in recent weeks. Until Friday they registered between 60 and 70% of registered.

“We hope that in the first two weeks, when we will work on reviewing previous content and emotional containment , we hope that the number of enrolled students will continue to increase .”

Zone 8 (Guayaquil, Durán and Samborondón) registers 1,569 educational units. Of that total, 884 are private individuals, 650 prosecutors, and the remainder are fiscomisionales and municipal, according to the Undersecretariat .

Deputy Secretary Higgins said that a compact curriculum will be used, which will begin with emotional containment. And topics will be prioritized, mainly in the development of student skills .

The return to classes was scheduled for April 13 in the Costa cycle. Due to the pandemic, the schedule changed to May 4 and then the postponement was announced to June 1.

The expansion of enrollments and the economic crisis generated by the covid-19 hit several private schools. As of Friday, 20 institutions had notified the Ministry of its closure in zone 8, according to the guilds of private education .

These establishments had to report the cessation of operation until Saturday and prepare a contingency plan for the transfer of students . The Undersecretariat of Zone 8 made sure that there are quotas in the public system. Until the beginning of the previous week, the system reported 9,300 transfer requests, from prosecutor to prosecutor and from individual to prosecutor.
