Fourteen years after the assassination of the deputy of the Movimiento Popular Democratico (MPD), Jaime Hurtado Gonzalez, the prime suspect in his murder, the former police officer, Washington Aguirre Freile, who remained a fugitive from justice, was arrested by the Italian police, due to the detection of irregularities on his documents.
The interior minister, Jose Serrano, through his Twitter account, confirmed this: “Washington Aguirre, required by the assassination of Attorney Jaime Hurtado was arrested in Italy, extradition proceedings have began. “
Serrano revealed that Aguirre was arrested in the Rome Fiumicino airport in immigration control under the identity of Juan Pablo Coppiano Moreira.
Roman Officers checked his ID card and noticed that it says he was born in the province of Manabi, which led officers to investigate and subsequently check that he had an international red notice alert by Interpol.
A few days after the murder of Hurtado, Aguirre was arrested and sentenced to six years in prison for conspiracy. Moreover, the suspect had three more charges of murder and possession of weapons, but remained pending because in 2001, after serving two years of his sentence, he was released benefited from the reduced sentences (2×1) and then fled the country without facing his charges.
