A few days after the murder of Hurtado, Aguirre was arrested and sentenced to six years in prison for conspiracy. Moreover, the suspect had three more charges of murder and possession of weapons, but remained pending because in 2001, after serving two years of his sentence, he was released benefited from the reduced sentences (2×1) and then fled the country without facing his charges.
