Syrian Army Continues to Assail Rebel Strongholds
Recently the Syrian army has besieged the city of Al-Heffa, one of the last remaining strongholds on the Syrian-Turkish border.
Meanwhile the UN Secretary Ban Ki-Moon expressed his concern personally, as UN observers reported the intensified rebel activity. The observers also informed that the government is using helicopters and heavy artillery. Several civilians are also trapped in war zones.
The UN wants to prevent a full-scale civil war in Al-Heffa hence they want to reinstate observers from the UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS). The UN-Arab League envoy, Kofi Annan joined the demand, this decision is also being supported by Washington D.C.
Meanwhile the Humans Rights Watch (HRW) informed that the UN Security Council must impose sanctions to Syria, because more than 1,176 children have perished since February 2011. In the report of HRW there was also information of tortured children by the hand of government supporters. (AV)
