The Litigious Electoral Tribunal (TCE for its Spanish acronym) desisted from submitting to the Assembly its 26 proposed reforms to the Code of Democracy, which was approved weeks ago.

While the National Electoral Council (CNE) approved its reforms (which were 33), but excluded the one that referred to the distribution of party funds among national and local groups.

Councilor Ana Marcela Paredes stated that after talks between President of the TEC and the CNE, Patricio Baca and Juan Pablo Pozo, respectively, it was agreed that the first will send an official letter withdrawing the proposal. He argued that this had been criticized by various political sectors, which detected inconsistencies with the Constitution.

The TCE raises, among other things, the immunity of election judges for political control of the Assembly; the faculty of the plenary to appoint associate judges that would have the same powers and responsibilities as the principal judges; and tougher penalties for polling firms.

The CNE, however, decided “not to change” the distribution of party funds, and to confer the power to the Assembly to decide.
