The Justicia Social movement has a free hand to register the presidential binomial made up of Álvaro Noboa and Gino Cornejo for the general elections of 2021.
In the early morning of this Wednesday, December 9, 2020, the ruling of the Contentious Electoral Tribunal (TCE) was made public , in which the National Electoral Council (CNE) was ordered to grant Social Justice, List 11, a new deadline to start the registration of “all the candidacies for the dignities of popular election constant in the call for elections 2021, without prejudice to explicitly and exclusively validate those that are qualified and firm.”
The Court’s ruling obliges the CNE to process the registration of the Noboa-Cornejo binomial . Weeks ago, the body reconsidered the guidelines for Social Justice to participate in the elections, under equal conditions, complying with the ruling of the TCE that restored its legal status. The CNE argued that there was no room for the registration of a new presidential binomial, since Fabricio Correa was not replaced within the legal deadlines, after resigning his candidacy.
The TCE also asked the CNE that Social Justice have reasonable time to hold primary elections and accept candidacies in those electoral districts that had not held them “because they did not have the same time and certainty as the other political organizations.” .
The TCE resolution was known hours after the National Electoral Council confirmed that 16 presidential pairs are qualified for the general elections of February 7, 2021.
With the Noboa-Cornejo formula , the pairs present on the presidential ballot for the elections would rise to 17 .
