Posted On 27 Feb 2013

The Third Court of Crime of the National Court of Justice found the ten youths, known as “the 10 of Luluncoto”, guilty of “attempted subversion” by the Prosecutor’s Office under the charges of plotting against state security.

The youths were arrested in an apartment in the south of Quito, on March 3, 2012, in an operation called Red Sun, for allegedly planting pamphleteering bombs in Quito, Cuenca and Guayaquil, so the government accused them of sabotage and terrorism.

Abigail Heras and Cristina Campaña had been into custody for almost a year, and now they have to pay another year in Prison.

Ramiro Garcia, defense attorney of the youths, said judges changed, at the last minute, the bases to sentence them because the Prosecution could never prove its accusations. He said that the sentence is used by the state as social pedagogy.

Pablo Castro, one of the accused, said that throughout this process, the only thing that is certain is that their innocence was proven.
