The Armed Forces declared their “obedience, non-deliberative” and “above all, their subordination” to the country’s constitution while stating that the decisions on Sunday’s elections are “the exclusive competence of the Electoral Function.”
“The Armed Forces as part of the structure of the Ecuadorian State clarify that the Armed Forces are obedient, non-deliberative and, above all, subordinate to the norms established by the Constitution,” the institution said in a statement on its website.
Therefore, “the decisions and resolutions concerning the final results of the electoral process, shall be resolved by the electoral function.”
The armed forces issued this communiqué to express “concern about the events that are occurring in the country” and against “certain interests of groups or individuals who want the interference of the military institution.”
Shortly after the closure of the polling stations last Sunday on the occasion of the runoff, the opposition party Creando Oportunidades (CREO) reported that they considered the election fraudulent, an assertion rejected by the electoral body.
According to the official results of the National Electoral Council (CNE), with the 99.97% of the votes counted Moreno gets the 51.14% of the votes, while Lasso the 48.86%.
