The balance of the electronic money grew by $ 3 million in Ecuador in 2016

The balance of electronic money in the account of the Central Bank of Ecuador (BCE) rose by three million in 2016. This is a “very modest” figure and would show that this means of payment “does not generate the acceptance of citizens, despite the efforts made by the Government to promote it,” says the editor of Weekly Analysis, Alberto Acosta Burneo.
However, for Ricardo Quiroga, an adviser to the Electronic Money project, last year the figures denoted a “significant leap.”
The balance of electronic money stands at $ 3.8 million as of November 2016, while it was $ 800,000 in December 2015. The amount of transactions in dollars is $ 12.9 million, and between July and December, there were about 200,000 new virtual accounts registered with the BCE.
Citizens also have different perceptions. “We have not received new payments with electronic money,” says Jeannette Cabezas, owner of the Rico Cocolon restaurant, who participated in an e-money demonstration plan.
In a hardware store, Luis Guerrero says that although the electronic money posters are visible, no person has asked to pay with it.
