The banana has more hope in 2016
The international scene is not on the side of Ecuador this year and 2016 may be as difficult as the present year, according to the analysis of figures held yesterday in the inaugural conference of the XII International Forum of Bananas. Three former finance ministers and a former Undersecretary of Foreign Trade met to emphasize the performance of the country for a decade until the arrival of the present crisis, the impact of falling oil prices and other commodities and the dollar appreciation.
Despite the conclusion, to which we will arrive later, the country is placed in an economic environment that forces it to look back at the lack of savings or investments, the export sector and, in particular, bananas are among “the winners.”
On one hand, it is the activity that will receive greater government support because it can receive foreign currency in a dollarized country that does not print money, according to the thesis of the former finance minister Fausto Ortiz. And secondly, according to the vision of another former finance minister, Jorge Gallardo Zavala, this fruit exports have continued to grow this year in spite of everything.
